We have long roots in the optical industry

Although CooperVision was born in 1980, our history actually goes back much further.

Our parent company, CooperCompanies, is a global medical device company publicly traded on the NYSE Euronext (NYSE:COO). Cooper has over 9,000 employees with products sold in over 100 countries. It is headquartered in San Ramon, CA, USA.

Cooper’s origins go back to 1958. In 1967, Cooper Tinsley Laboratories changed its name to “Cooper Laboratories, Inc.” As the company expanded globally, multiple locations opened around the world.

The result? Many innovations in both the surgical and contact lens industries.

In 1978, the company later reorganized into five independent business units that focused on specialized market segments. CooperVision then incorporated in 1980, and we’ve been striving to further our storied history even more.

Expansion and Acquisitions

CooperVision grew quickly.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, we acquired several ocular lens companies, increasing our product line and manufacturing capacity. But we didn’t stop there. Our research and development grew as well. This combination of R&D and manufacturing strength would later prove to be extremely beneficial to the company, our partners, and our wearers.

In 2005, CooperVision became the world’s third largest soft contact lens company.

In fiscal year 2011, CooperVision celebrated a milestone in achieving over $1 billion in global sales. Are we resting there? Absolutely not. We’re continuing to move forward, pushing ourselves to even more innovative ways to help improve the vision and comfort of contact lens wearers.

We have a long history, but stay tuned for more. We’re just getting started.
